SINGAPORE : It's that time of the year again when Singaporeans are spoilt for choice as to which New Year's countdown party to go to.

Spectacular fireworks - that's what will greet Singaporeans at the Marina Bay Countdown.
Last year, 160,000 people turned up for this, and this year, organisers promise a larger scale event with more performances and activities.
But what if the weather doesn't hold up?
"The fireworks display will definitely still go on. From what we know, people will still brave the rain and carry their umbrellas and come down to watch the fireworks," says Chow Keat Yeng, Programme Marketing Officer at The Esplanade.

Another in-place is the Vivo City rooftop where local Mandarin pop star JJ Lin, Singapore Idols Taufik and Hady, and other MediaCorp stars will perform to a crowd of some 4,000 people.

And the National Museum is expecting some 500 people to party the night away in its sheltered area.
It's the first time a museum in Singapore is being transformed into a disco.
So expect pulsating music, pyrotechnics and a captivating performance by dancers suspended in the air.
"We are trying to show the young, especially, and the public, that the museum is fun, hip and happening. And having a countdown party set against a background of 700 years worth of history will make a difference," says Rosedini Abdul Rahim, Assistant Manager of Programming at National Museum.

And if you're more of a beach bum, then head down to Siloso Beach at Sentosa.

Those nostalgic for a winter countdown can head up to the Jewel Box at Mount Faber where half an hour of snowfall will take place at the stroke of midnight.

Countdown parties will also take place in the heartlands.

One such place is Downtown East in Pasir Ris where 50,000 people are expected to party the night away with Singapore bands and regional celebrities like Taiwanese singer Fan Wei Qi. - CNA /ls

Studies:
I've been pondering alot recently.
I have to do my studies well.
I've wasted enough time.
I've retained.
It made me felt like a loser.

Hmm.Christmas was pretty normal.
On the Eve itself.
I was feeling kinda lonely.

Woke up late.

Rebel Riders; They have nowhere to practise and their sport is not recognised here, yet Singapore's BMX riders are flying high

BYLINE: Wei Koh

BMX RIDERS are part aerial daredevils, part masochists and every inch dedicated sportsmen who spend eight hours a day honing their skills on dirt jumps, street courses and carparks around our island.

Most of them do this for little recognition, no pay and without a proper facility to practise. Singapore's skate parks are designed for and open only to skateboarders and in-line skaters. Bikes are strictly forbidden.

Besides, to practise the sport they are so passionate about, Singapore's 200-odd BMX riders have to deal with the public perception of them being defiant and menacing.

So why is BMX a sport that is so disdained by the older generation and so embraced by our youth?

Put it down to a generational gap between older officials who still perceive BMX as a fringe or 'extreme sport' and the young riders who are so enthusiastic about it they're willing to suffer abrasions and bruises to improve their ability.

Mr Gilbert Tan, 47 is the father of a BMX-riding son.

He says: 'If our young people applied 10 per cent of the enthusiasm they have for BMX to football or table tennis, we would produce champions.'

In the rest of the world, a new generation of riders and fans has created a popularity explosion surrounding BMX.

In the United States, BMX competitions are widely attended and televised, while top riders such as Matt Hoffman and Dave Mira - both X Games champions - are multimillionaires. Hoffman commands a one-day appearance fee of US$20,000 (S$34,000) and is regularly booked up. Mira is one of the most widely recognised athletes in the US.

As an example of how much BMX has hit critical mass, MTV's widely successful episode of itsreality prog- ramme Made followed the life of a pretty teenage girl who wanted to become a BMX pro.

After one month of intensive training, she successfully landed a back flip, becoming the second female in the history of the sport to do so.

So why is BMX so much under the radar in a country where the urban landscape seems a perfect fit for the sport?

Again this stems from the lack of legitimacy for the sport here.

'It's ironic,' says Mr Martin Lee, 34, and a BMX fan.

'Here is a sport that takes so much athleticism and it gets no support. Table tennis, on the other hand, which is essentially a pair of mainland Chinese ladies smacking a novelty toy back and forth, is supposed to be a cause for national pride. Yeah, right.'

One person helping to improve BMX's visibility is Mr Simon Lim, 35, who runs a bike shop named 20 Inch Circle.

He has set up a website, http://www.20incho.com/, which is a hotbed for exchanging information and learning about Singapore's BMX community.

Mr Lim also runs a club called B3 (that stands for bikes, blades and boards) with the Taman Jurong Constituency sports club to introduce BMX to young people.

The B3 club offers first-time riders an opportunity to learn from Singapore's top riders.

Two of B3's board members are 21-year-old riders Ng Chee Keong and Low Chi Siang.

Both have achieved glory in their sport, which is particularly impressive considering that they have had essentially no place to practice.

Mr Ng is the only rider in Singapore to be sponsored by an international company.

When he was 18 years old, he tore up the street course with such resounding skill during the Singapore leg of the Phillips X Rage competition that he caught the eye of judge and star rider Jay Miron.

He won the competition and was flown to Kuala Lumpur to compete in the Malaysian leg, which he won too.

Miron approached him and he was soon a sponsored rider for Miron's company's Macneil bikes.

Mr Ng says: 'I want to be a pro but it's very hard in an environment that doesn't even have one good ramp.'

Mr Low started BMX after watching it on TV.

He joined his neighbourhood friends and started jumping his bike.

A few years later, he competed and was placed in the top 10 at the Asian X Games. He laments the lack of places to practise in Singapore: 'The skate parks won't let us practise, so we have to create our own courses with urban obstacles or build our own dirt ramps.'

Both riders feel one of the huge blows dealt to the BMX scene was the death of 14-year-old Harry Chau Hon Wai during a practice run of the 2001 Asian X Games.

Mr Lim, who was a judge for the event, says: 'Honestly, his death was the result of a freak accident and should not be a reflection of the danger of the sport.

No one talks about it, but I believe the accident badly affected the sport's reputation.'

In an effort to minimise risk and generate public awareness, Mr Lim created B3 to teach proper techniques to new riders.

He has even met officials who have considered making it an extracurricular activity in schools.

All is not lost, however.

As the sport becomes more visible, through televised programmes such as the X Games and Blue Torch, parents have become more aware of BMX as a sport.

i just came back form malaysia, KL.
went there for church camp las...
at the berjaya times square..
its quite a grand place.
and the food there is gd la.
theres one night where the bunch of us drove to the twin towers there for supper and viewing.. the food is really good.. seriously.
although its jus a roadside stal.. but ya.the prices are low and the food is better thn most restaurants.haha.
